Icebreakers
LHSS is now offering a way for our youngest skaters to become part of our regular LHSS camp programming. The program will be led by our Senior Coach, Jessica Lanka, alongside a team of enthusiastic and knowledgeable coaches. Our goal is simple: create a fun, challenging environment where young players can develop their skating skills, build confidence, and leave the ice asking, "When can I come back?!"
Designed for our youngest skaters, our Icebreakers program is about more than teaching skating skills. This program is designed to build a strong skating foundation while also teaching young players how to learn and how to be coached to the LHSS standard. Through age-appropriate instruction, repetition, challenges, competition, and fun, players will develop the skills and habits they need for their next hockey environment.
Young players should be challenged while still loving coming to the rink!
Ages
This program is for our youngest LHSS skaters, typically 5-8 years old.
*Skaters must have their own equipment and have completed a year of Learn to Play program.
**Not sure if your skater has enough experience? See the FAQs below.
When & Where
Sessions will occur throughout the year, often in conjunction with our regular LHSS camp programming (i.e., New Years Camp, Spring Camp, Summer Training). There may also be pop-up sessions offered throughout the year.
Please see below for specific times, locations, and details depending on the session in question.
Evaluation & Player Progression
Evaluation
This program will be curriculum-based rather than week-based. Each practice/session will stand on its own while reinforcing the same core Icebreakers skills, standards, and coaching principles. Player development will be observed continuously throughout the year, allowing each player to progress at their own pace and earn their next step when they are ready.
There is no rush to move up and no automatic graduation based on age or attendance. Players move forward when they are ready - and when they've earned their next step.
Evaluations happen fluidly throughout the year. There is no predetermined graduation day or testing period for every players.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my skater is ready (i.e., has enough skating experience) to join the Icebreaker sessions?
This is a great question! You should be able to answer yes to all of the following statements:
- My skater can skate independently forward and backward the length of the ice
- My skater can slow down and come to a stop
- My skater can listen and watch a demonstration of a drill and retain simple instruction
- My skater can find their place in line, follow the flow of drill, and be ready for the repetitions
- My skater is ready to take their development to the next level and grow and as competitive athlete
If you are still not sure if your skater is a good fit, please reach out to Coach Jessica or Coach Lee to discuss further.
Can my 4-year old participate in this program?
Four-year old players may be considered for the program with prior approval from Coach Jessica. If you think your child may be a good fit, please submit a short skating video to Coach Jessica to evaluate. She will communicate with you whether your child has been approved to participate.
What should my skater wear/bring to camp?
All skaters should have wear full equipment (including helmet, hockey skates, full pads, and hockey stick) and standard practice attire. No special jersey is required.
